Why Water Beads?
Okay, so I was sitting at home playing with Layton as usual and as he completely ignored all of the super-fun toys he has I started thinking. I decided to try and find something that would catch his interest for more than 10 seconds. I had seen people use water beads before for toddler activities and I remembered using them for my wedding centerpieces. They were so cheap and easy to do for that, too!
(Doesn’t this just look so fancy? LOL!)
Cheap Sensory Play Activity
I immediately searched Amazon and found this great deal! It was only $8.60 for a big bag of these water beads! They come as dry little bitty beads and you just put some in a baggie, jar or even on a water table, then just add water. They quickly grow as they absorb the water and they are so fun to play with! My whole family enjoyed them. I used these Hefty zipper bags to make them in and it worked out very well. They didn’t leak at all. I ended up taping it to the living room window that Layton always stares out of. He has literally spent hours there already playing with this bag of water beads and moving them all around. This way he can’t somehow get the bag open and spill them everywhere. The beads are non-toxic, though, which made my mommy heart happy.
Just look at how cute my little Layton is playing with those water beads! He loves them so much!
I would recommend starting with a very small amount of the dry water beads and gradually working your way up once they start growing. I made the mistake of adding like 1/3 of the amount I received into the zipper bag. Once they started growing I was like, “I have made a terrible mistake.” Lol! I ended up with four quart sized bags full of water beads after that. Haha!
He came straight home from school today and started playing with them all over again.
Let me know if you get to try this out and what you think about it. I’ll be trying to think of a prettier way to put them on the window than a zipper bag and masking tape, but for now this works great. Do you have any sensory play ideas that your kids love? Leave them in the comments below.
